There’s been a shooting with multiple victims
at a Navy yard not far from Capitol Hill. All morning long there were people fleeing the scene, emergency vehicles arriving, and victims being rushed away. It looked like… well, it looked like a lot of the other shooting incidents that occur in this country with such alarming regularity. Great, now we have shooting rampages and thousand-year floods in a grim competition to see which one will occur more frequently in this country. Shootings and weather-related disasters—two problems that don’t have much in common except that there are people who stand to profit from denying that they are a problem.
The terrible floods in Colorado
are being called a “1,000 year event.” Have you noticed that thousand-year events seem to occur every year these days? We’re going to have to admit that these climate events are happening with much more regularity, or else we’re going to have to drastically change our impression of how long a thousand years is.
In good news, the United States and Russia reached an agreement
on how to secure and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles. Conservatives are all over the place on this one. Some, like John McCain, are livid that we’re not going to be helping the rebels. Other conservatives say that the rebels are Al Qaeda. The American rightwing is split into more factions than the Syrian rebels are.
Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham issued a joint statement
calling the agreement on Syria “an act of provocative weakness.” John & Lindsey complain that Assad “is now our negotiating partner.” For John McCain, someone is your “negotiating partner” if you’re not actively bombing them.
Finally, for the first time, a woman of Indian-American descent has won the Miss America title
. And as soon as you read that headline, you can guarantee that the article is going to include the phrase “Racist tweets.” A lot of those racist tweets
call this Indian woman an Arab... as though just tweeting an attack isn’t enough to show your ignorance.
