Hard Truths

by Randi Rhodes posted May 2 2012 5:02PM
Yesterday the President went to Afghanistan. In the middle of an election where his opponent claims to have easy answers, this President isn’t afraid to turn the spotlight on a problem that doesn’t have an easy solution. While Mitt Romney tries to say things that will make everybody happy, Barack Obama is not afraid to say things he knows won’t make anybody happy. What the President said yesterday isn’t likely to satisfy anyone, which indicates he was probably telling you the truth. Afghanistan is called the “graveyard of empires.” You can’t turn a graveyard into anything else. All you can do is clean it up a bit, and try to get out before night falls.

Mitt Romney’s openly gay foreign policy advisor has been hounded from the job after less than two weeks. You really have to question the judgment of an openly gay person who chooses to be a Republican. And yes, I believe that being Republican is a choice. I know that there are those who think you are born that way. But how good of a foreign policy advisor can a person be if they are openly gay and still choose to be a Republican? I don’t trust someone to figure out the nuances of foreign policy when they don’t seem to be aware that the people they work for hate them for what they are.

Newt Gingrich is leaving the campaign today. Of course, Newt is merely “suspending” his campaign. It’ll be preserved like a pickled ham... and kind of like Newt himself. Doesn’t Newt look like a leader of a communist nation whose corpse was embalmed and put on public display? That’s essentially the story of Newt Gingrich, except that Newt is still alive. For the past few months, true believers have been filing past the living Gingrich like people filing past the body of Lenin on display in Red Square. He looks so lifelike!

Newt will formally endorse Romney in a few weeks. Newt realizes that will be the last time there will be cameras pointed at him... unless he gets married yet again. He said he has no regrets about his decision to run. But then, if Newt had the ability to feel regret, he would never stop hysterically crying. After today, we won’t have Newt Gingrich to kick around anymore. That’s OK—it’s turning out to be a lot of fun kicking Mitt Romney around.
