A proposed ban on assault weapons has been dropped
from the gun control bill that the Senate is considering. The question has been asked “If not now, when?” I guess we’ll have to wait for a tragedy worse than Newtown. The horrifying thing is that it’s bound to happen.
Harry Reid told Dianne Feinstein, the author of the assault weapons ban, that it will not be included
in the version of the bill that will come to the floor. In a sense, Harry Reid is trying to offer the NRA a smaller target, hoping they just might miss this time. Harry Reid wants a bill that can get the 60 votes to avoid a filibuster. Harry is a pragmatist. But is refusing to even try to prevent tragedies like Newtown really pragmatic in the larger sense? We should deal with reality, not just the reality that the NRA is trying to force on to us.
An Iraq war veteran who is dying from wounds he received in the war has sent an open letter
to George Bush and Dick Cheney. Spoiler alert—it is not a thank you letter. I guarantee you that George Bush will never read this letter—and not just because I don’t think that George Bush can read. The people around George Bush do a much better job of protecting him from anything unpleasant than George Bush did protecting our troops when he sent them into harm’s way. I would say that Tomas Young, and soldiers like him, are the ones who have ended up paying for Bush and Cheney’s mistake... but Bush and Cheney did this all intentionally.
Washington didn’t spend a lot of time yesterday
thinking about the anniversary of the Iraq War. Maybe that was appropriate. They didn’t spend much time thinking about it when they voted to launch it 10 years ago either.
Have you been watching the History Channel mini-series “The Bible”? I’ll save you the trouble—the book is a lot better. Of course, a lot of people have managed to take the wrong message away from reading the book. But then most of those people really haven’t read the book. Producer Mark Burnett is making it a lot easier to take the wrong message away from the TV mini-series. In fact, he seems to almost be inviting people to do that. At least in the book, the Devil isn’t portrayed as a black man, let alone as one who is a dead ringer for President Obama
. Who did the casting for this mini-series—Pat Robertson?
